PARKMUSIC New Horizons '11

A balloon as percussion; a symphony of many balloons with flutes; sound machines of canvas and bamboo in the field of flowers as tall as people; music for bottles, tubes, bells to play; Hungarian rock on the harpsichord in the meadow with a view of the Hunsrück Mountains; a storm of percussion, nostalgia-filled horn, a velvety cello and the public wandering from venue to venue for the 15th birthday of PARK MUSIC New Horizons. The festival, a complete artistic work which is held once a year by singer and music artist Sigune von Osten, once again offered a great variety of unusual and extraordinary auditory and visual experiences and opened New Horizons. As is customary, the natural surroundings of the Trombacher Court gave way to the scene, stage, and auditorium. With this introduction, the festival blended seamlessly with this year?s motto, established by the supporting Cultural Summer Rheinland-Pfalz, ?Naturally Culture?.

The activities began with a two-part workshop with artist-in-residence Hans van Koolwijk and his original, self-created instruments.

His unparalleled sound machines and installations were major parts of the program throughout the two days of the festival. Alongside Hans van Koolwijk, the festival featured two additional composers: French composer, poet, and festival leader Claude Lefebvre, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday in 2011 ? he was present - and Greek-French composer and architect Iannis Xenakis.

The remarkable silent-film performance of Theda, with and by English artist Georgina Starrand with a live musical performance by and withSigune von Osten

and the balloon-release performance, directed by Hans van Koolwijk and performed by the public, were major highlights of the festival.

Sound Laboratory in the Magic Forest was the title of the feature report in the newspaper:

Regardless of how one arrived ? as follower or sceptic ? one left with unforgettable sounds resounding in his ears... Everything in this situation mirrors a great event, a phenomenon revealed by the aura of the peculiar: the setting, the tall woman with the wavy hair, the musicians dressed in white, the instruments arranged upon the uneven crags, the flock of spectators who came from far and near to this yearly Mecca of new music to absorb the uncommon sounds. Everything symbolises experiment and action art... Every second person has a digital souvenir with which the message of the pleasurably exhilarating elixir of sounds from the small enchanted forest will be certainly and deservedly carried on.

It was again a wonderful experience. Thank you sincerely. The brand new music and sounds paired with the very beautiful landscape and house, the very personal speech... all of that makes the experience something unique, international. No one could experience something like that in a large city, where the private atmosphere would be lacking. O. u. U.

We have once again taken long-lasting, very impressive acoustic and visual impressions along with us! G. u. B. B.

Park Music 2011 impressed us once again. I still have chills from the memory of the silent movie by Theda Bara and your interpretation ? it was wonderful. We are happy that we could be there again ? we would otherwise have missed out on a great deal. R. u. R. M.

We really enjoyed your ParkMusic festival!! It was such a wonderful weekend of events, and was really great to hear your accompaniment to THEDA again. It is such a very special festival and in an amazingly lovely setting. G.S.

For me / us, this type of music was and is new territory in which one can open oneself, reach into one?s inner feelings. K. K.
